So the definition of holistic health is about caring for the whole person – providing for your physical, mental, spiritual and social needs. It’s rooted in the understanding that all these aspects affect your overall health and being unwell in one aspects affects you in others.

When it comes to whole health body, you may have not considered the impact of oral hygiene on your fertility. The research here is more so rather associations and links between these two aspects rather than causative factors. But, nonetheless let’s take a look at what we know.

  1. For those trying to conceive – A number of studies suggest a correlation between periodontal disease, “time to conception,” and infertility in both men and women.

  2. Don’t forget to consider your man ~ In men, poor oral health has been associated with erectile dysfunction, a lower sperm count and reduced sperm motility.

  3. The links continue into pregnancy and beyond ~ during pregnancy poor oral health has been associated with premature birth, low birthweight babies, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

It’s definitely worth getting a teeth checkup if you are planning pregnancy, getting on top of any issues in this department may leave you heading into a smoother conception, pregnancy and beyond.
